The Chugiak Mustangs showed West Valley why they’re the No. 1 girls team in the state with a 59-28 thrashing of the Wolfpack on Thursday at the Lady Lynx Prep Shootout in Anchorage.

The Wolfpack trailed just 10-8 after one quarter before getting outscored 37-14 over the next two frames.

“We just collapsed,” coach Steve Caciari said. “Some of our decision-making wasn’t at its best. To credit Chugiak, in order to beat that team we’ve got to play our best. … We’re capable of playing better.”

The stat sheet showed evidence of that as West Valley committed 27 turnovers and shot just 26 percent from the field. Rose Mattson and Whitne’ Blackburn led West Valley with eight points apiece.

West Valley next meets Wasilla today in the tournament at Dimond High School.
